English Vocabulary in Use - серия учебных пособий, предназначенных для расширения словарного запаса. Эти учебники выпускаются кембриджским издательством в серии «in Use», которая наиболее известна благодаря популярной грамматике Реймонда Мерфи. Несмотря на сходство формата со «старшим братом» - «синим Мерфи» и простоту изложения материала, English Vocabulary in Use является далеко не таким полезным учебником, как можно было бы предположить.
Эта серия учебников рассчитана на уровни знания английского языка от Elementary до Advanced. Изначально было выпущено три книги серии, но в новом, втором издании уровни Upper-Intermediate и Advanced разделили на две книги, а содержание Pre-Intermediate & Intermediate немного обновили. Второе издание пособий было выпущено на глянцевой бумаге и в полноцвете, в то время как старое было черно-белым.
Книги можно использовать как в классе, так и самостоятельно. Для занятий в классе есть издание без ответов (чтобы не списывали, а честно делали упражнения), но у нас в продаже оно встречается реже, т.к. книгу в основном покупают для самостоятельных занятий, а преподавателям на курсах проще сделать несколько ксерокопий нужных страниц, чем тащить на урок десяток экземпляров книжки без ответов.
Пособие повторяет формат учебника English Grammar in Use: левая половина каждого разворота отведена под теорию, а правая - под упражнения на закрепление пройденного. Работать с юнитами можно в любом порядке. Все юниты разбиты на несколько тем: советы по расширению словарного запаса, словообразование, базовые понятия (числа, даты и т.д.), тематические разделы (одежда, еда, компьютеры), идиомы, фразовые глаголы и др. По сравнению с предыдущим изданием, прибавилось тематических разделов, но убавилось юнитов в идиомах и фразовых глаголах.
